Angie Renfro

Through the simple, sweeping arc of a telephone wire or the entanglement of a tree’s branches Angie Renfro’s paintings convey both a feeling of movement and a sense of calm. Bold brush strokes and vibrant, dripping colors combine with thoughtful composition and simple subject matter to create a powerful quiet. It is this duality that is so captivating about her work.

Also juxtaposed in her work is a sense of nostalgia and of modernity. While her works evoke memories and sense of longing for the past, they are painted in a style that is fresh and unique. She eschews the traditional painterly methods of the past to create a distinctive contemporary aesthetic. The result is an arresting combination of familiarity and originality that comprises her singular style.

As a child, Angie's parents recognized her interest in art and enrolled her in a small painting class that met once a week in the teacher's garage. This early introduction fueled her desire to pursue artistic ambitions. A native Texan, Angie moved to San Francisco to attend art school. In 2002, Angie received a BFA in Illustration from the Academy of Art College and remained in the city to pursue a variety of artistic avenues. The experience she gained from working in various fields of design has had a tremendous influence on her work.

Constantly evolving and exploring new ways to communicate with the viewer, Angie never loses focus on her attempt to capture the beauty in the often overlooked. Whether the subject is a bird on a telephone wire or an empty field, there is a quality to such objects that is at once lonely and captivating. Her intention is that by drawing attention to such subjects, the viewer too, will appreciate their quiet, unassuming beauty.

Renfro's paintings are now carried in several galleries across the country. She was named "Artist to Watch" by Southwest Magazine in October 2006 and was featured in the August 2008 edition of American Art Collector.
